I have had this car for about 17 years and am finally able to devote some time to it.I bought the body and chassis from a fellow in Richmond Calif. His dad owned a wrecking business and my neighbor and I went to his house to check out a 5-liter Ford motor and 5 speed that we were going to put in his 66 fastback Mustang. When we went into his back yard, the first thing I saw was the Kellison wedged between a fence and his garage. He thought the body was sitting on an early corvette chassis. He was wrong. The chassis was actually an underslung 4x3" box chassis using a C1 corvette front suspension and running gear. The car looked terrible and had no engine or tranny, but all the fiberglass was there. I gave him $600.00 for everything. This was in the mid 90s and I was able to track Jim Kellison down. He owned a coin and mineral business called Diamond Palace in Marysville, Ca. After talking to him on the phone a couple of times I arranged a meeting for lunch and I brought him some pictures of the car. Jim told me that he believed that what I had was a J4 experimental coupe. I said I thought it was an Astra X300 GT. His comment was,"Hell, they're all my designs anyway". At this point, Jim gave me the best thing ever. He gave me a handwritten bill of sale from himself to me with a chassis number. Armed with this, last August, after making this thing move and stop under its own power, and stamping the chassis number on a piece of aluminum that I rivited to the frame, I went to the El Cerrito DMV where they issued to me a Calif. registration and title as a 1960 Kellison with Jim's chassis number. I was originally trying to set the car up to vintage road-race. The cage is done, but I think I'm getting a little too old for that stuff. The car is driveable and runs pretty well with all 1960 period correct mechanicals including 283 Chevy with2 wcfb's on the correct intake and 4 speed. I am improving its drivability every day. All the SW gauges work and now, I,m dialing in the suspension.
I have been busy doing a lot of bodywork and improving my Kellison's driveability. The car now has windshield wipers and I am currently wiring turn signals and driving lights. I have currently put just over 1000 relatively trouble-free miles on the car. It is awesome that Lord March actually owns a J6 Kellison. My car should be for sale by springtime. I feel like have saved an incredible piece of American automotive history. My wife's Christmas present to me was to go for a ride in the Kellison. She didn't scream or puke even once, so I think that I've done a pretty good job of putting this thing together. Have a Merry Christmas and I'll be in touch soon. Thanks Skip.
